Would you like to help?

1. Sponsor a student

You can sponsor a student. You can designate your sponsorship as a scholarship or a bursary. Scholarship would be merit-based, and would commonly be offered to high-performing students. Bursaries are for any student who is unable to afford the fees. All students have to pay an admission fee. Hostel students have an additional fee for board and lodging.

You can choose to set up a one-time scholarship fund in a fixed deposit (which can be in memory of a loved one ), and the interest credited will be used to pay the fees, or you can make the payments on a regular basis.

2. Completion of the Eliza Agnew Block-LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

24th April, 2024.

Dear Friends of Uduvil Girls’ College,

A Bicentennial Dream for Uduvil - Completion of the Eliza Agnew Memorial

As you are aware, Uduvil is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. Knowing of your interest in her growth, we wish to reach out to you with the following bicentennial appeal.

Taking into consideration the urgent need for more student-friendly classrooms, the foundation stone for a new set of classrooms was laid on April 9, 2014 on the school’s 190th year, with a view to completing it within two years. The new building is a memorial to the second principal of our school Ms. Eliza Agnew, fondly called the “mother of a thousand daughters” who served in Uduvil from 1839 to 1880 and continued to live in Jaffna till her death.

Upon completion of the ground floor and a part of the 1st floor of the building, the building was declared open on 2nd August 2017  in order to enable the students to begin using it. The construction of the building to date was achievable owing to the kind donations sent by generous donors.

Nearly eight years have passed since the laying of the foundation but the top floor of the building is yet to be completed. Although classes are held on the first floor, the walls need plastering and the balcony needs to be completed. The delay in obtaining funds to complete the roofing, has left the topmost floor open to the elements and rain water has started seeping through the slab onto the first floor. The contractor is of the opinion that unless we attend to this immediately, the iron bars will get corroded and damage the whole structure. The top floor which is yet to be built was designed to have collapsible partitions enabling the space to be used as classrooms (6), as well as recreation or activity rooms for the students, when needed.

The estimate for the completion of the building is approximately Rs. 20 million (US$ 63,000). We are indeed fortunate that a well-wisher has come forward with a donation of up to US$ 35,000, provided we do our part in matching this amount. As such, in practical terms it amounts to:

i)                    35 people contributing US$ 1000 each

OR

ii)                  70 people contributing US$ 500 each.

OR

iii)                350 people contributing US$ 100 each.

With this great offer of a matching grant, I strongly believe that the target is achievable, if we could all set our minds towards this great cause during this milestone Bicentenary Year!

Our beloved school has produced women who have been and are leaders in various fields. Let us also be a part of this unmatched legacy.

All contributions will be acknowledged with a receipt and a letter of acknowledgment.  Kindly email me on [email protected] once you have made your deposit. Please send your contributions to:

The buildings of the school are old and many of the older buildings are made of limestone. Regular maintenance of old buildings have to be carried out, and most of the buildings need attending to urgently.
